A 90 minute press event to bring attention to the serious impact and linkage between illegal drug use / injection drug use and spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Scheduled speakers include Dr. David Vlahov, Principle Investigator of the Hopkins ALIVE Study; Steve Passierb, President of the Partnership for a Drug Free America; Anthony Placido, Special Agent in Charge of the NY Division of the DEA; and David Waller, Cast Member of HIV Positive Voices.
Co-Sponsors: Drug Enforcement Administration, Partnership for a Drug Free America and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs.
January 28, 2005 HIV Positive Voices has been selected as a finalist in the New York Festivals International Film and Video Awards, which recognize "The World's Best Work" in informational, educational and industrial film productions and corporate video.
Now entering its 48th year, the number of countries entering the Film & Video competition has grown to 32 in the current competition. Of around 1,000 entries, just 237 have been short listed: and from these will be selected the Gold, Silver and Bronze World Medals. These Awards will be presented on January 28, 2005 at the New York Festivals Gala Awards Presentations to be held at the historic Hudson Theater just off New York City's glittering Times Square.
December 1, 2004 HIV Positive Voices was shown as part of many World AIDS Day programs around the world. At Johns Hopkins, it was integrated into two programs. At The Center for Communication Programs, the segment on Rosemary & Rickeena was featured during a special program emphasizing women and girls -the theme of this years WAD. It was the climax of a 1 ½ hour program and brought the whole issue to real human terms.
The Bloomberg School of Public Health featured the film in a special event which included a panel discussion after the screening, lead by Jim Williams, Co-Producer, and including Rosemary, Rickeena, David and Kimberly. It was well attended by students, faculty and others- including the Assistant Commissioner of Health from Baltimore City Health Department.
September 2004 - January 2005 The DEA (US Drug Enforcement administration) exhibit named "Target America: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause" in Times Square, New York City includes the segment on David Waller to show that one of the risks involved in using illicit drugs is contracting HIV. The exhibit is free, open to the public, and will run through the end of January, 2005.
September 17-23, 2004 The New York AIDS Film Festival awarded HIV Positive Voices first place for short documentary.
September 20, 2004 MPT (Maryland Public Television) broadcast the film without commercial interruption on Monday evening, September 20th at 11:00PM. Channels 22 and 67.
August 8, 2004 WJZ-TV (Baltimore's CBS affiliate) re-broadcast the film on Sunday morning, August 8th on Kai Jackson's public affairs program called "On Time" at 6:30AM, Channel 13.
